Let’s Dish

It’s 1:00 a.m. and I’m awake and emailing a client on the west coast (I’m at the Delaware beaches.) We’ve decided to create cocktails using real estate terms that have become familiar in our journey. He’s working on one called Adverse Possession; Mine is the Escalation Clause.

In my fifteen years of real estate, I’ve been fortunate enough to meet some extremely fascinating people. Until recently, I loved having them in my car, as it gave me a chance to know them better. If it’s a couple, I’d ask how they met. (It’s best to steer clear of politics and religion). But you can always, always, talk about food.

When chatting with clients, I ask, “Who cooks at your house?” One couple walked right through the most amazing kitchen like it was a hallway. When I pointed it out, they sheepishly confessed they ate out seven nights a week.

A quick browse through food related Facebook pages, yielded the following: Chrissy Teigen’s Green Bean Casserole (she’s married to John Legend and is an avid cook); new sparkling teas (with flavors like Lime Hibiscus); the best cheap, red wine at Trader Joes (Epicuro Primitivo according to Kitchn.com); and an article on Soy Curls (a meat substitute) by Bon Appetit. Excellent conversation starters if you need one.

Here at the Delaware beaches, we have an Eating Rehoboth food tour. It’s a three-hour walking culinary adventure that takes you to five different restaurants. You get to sample food and drinks at each location, and the tour guide gives you Rehoboth Beach history along the way. I’m a partner in this endeavor, along with a popular chef and our local restaurant critic.

Our local library has six book clubs, including a cookbook club. There’s a new selection each month that’s kept at the front desk. Members come and photocopy a recipe, then they meet online to discuss how the dish turned out. How fun is that?

Food trends are fascinating. This seemed to be the year of plant-based meats. Burger King introduced the Impossible Whopper; Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts debuted breakfast sandwiches featuring a plant-based sausage. Millennials in particular are swapping out dairy for nut, bean and grain milks. And gummy bears can now be flavored with prosecco or be a vitamin in disguise.

With people spending more time at home, food shows have become more popular than ever. Who hasn’t enjoyed Gordon Ramsey belittling someone in the kitchen? And what’s more intimidating than watching a ten-year-old make duck three ways on national television? My personal favorite, Binging with Babish by YouTube sensation, Andrew Rea, now has 8 million subscribers. I love that he’s not afraid to share his culinary misses as well as the hits.

2020 has been challenging in so many ways, but we’re going to be ok. We’re going to learn new things like, how to make mushroom risotto, which is not as easy as you think! What’s your recipe for success?
