During the pandemic of 2020, many of us found ourselves homebound and isolated from contacting or being around anyone. Depending on which part of the country you were in, your social interactions were few and far between and due to restrictions, there were limitations on how we could help those in need. Many donation sites were not accepting items and gathering to work together as a group to assist others was limited due to the concerns involved in interacting with people.
At the beginning of 2021, my local RE/MAX office, RE/MAX Elite, in central Kentucky, put together a committee to identify ways to serve our community as things began opening up. Thus the Serving Our Community (SOC) Committee came to fruition. With three office locations our broker, Kristy Gooch, along with her support staff, put together 3-4 people from each office to form the committee. We conducted our first meeting via Zoom early in the year to establish the mission statement, purpose and begin brainstorming for ideas.
Since out first meeting we have had several projects that have helped our community! We began by dropping off PPE at several of our local senior communities in early March. Most of them were not allowing visitors, so we scheduled a time to stop by and handed the bags to one of their employees. In May we celebrated National Nurses Day by delivering donuts to several of the local hospitals. Our most recent philanthropic activity was collecting small suitcases and bags for foster care kids and donating them to a local agency. Later this year our offices will participate in headstone cleaning at our local military cemetery, a skeet shoot to benefit out local Habitat for Humanity group, and we will be collecting items for a local children's home.
Spending 2020 so hyper-focused on our own needs and feelings of isolation, it's been refreshing to turn our focus outward by helping our communities as they get their feet back on the ground. Now that our state is opening up more, our SOC Committee is excited about future opportunities where we can serve and continue to make a difference in the lives of those communities where we live and work!
