Let me start this off by saying I am a total foodie! I love cooking, baking, wining, and dining. I have found that the food I love the most is not the healthiest for me. For my first few years in real estate, I was guilty of letting my ‘crazy schedule’ be the excuse for getting takeout, eating Chick-Fil-A for lunch, or asking my fiancé to meet me at a restaurant when we both got done working. I also gave myself a pass at eating unhealthily because I would workout.
I ended up hurting my knee and had to take about a year off from working out and running. My health suffered because I did not change my eating habits. There is a big part of me that absolutely hates that I had to buy bigger clothes, but it was so much more than that. I felt sluggish every day, it felt like I was running a marathon just to work and keep my house in order.
My fiancé and I decided to make a change, we decided to do meal prepping for 50-80% of our weekly meals. What that equates to is on very busy weeks, we meal prep Monday through Thursday three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner.) Friday through Sunday usually just two meals a day. This depends on if we go out to eat Friday or Saturday night or if we are home to cook breakfast on Saturday or Sunday. We try to be around 16-18 meals prepped on 80% weeks. On weeks where I have some evenings open, I do like to cook, So we meal prep for breakfast, lunch and only 2-3 dinners for the week.
It may sound a little confusing and intimidating but we did not start out going 80% in the beginning. We started with just a few meals and tweaked it each week to get to something that works for our lifestyle. We love being able to go out to eat on Friday or Saturday night and enjoy our meal because we feel like we earned it for following our own rules all week.
My fiancé is in medical sales so there are times where an unexpected dinner will pop up, and we go without hesitation or feeling guilty. Having an option to fall back on is great, you know you have a healthy option instead of making a rash decision to run through fast food.
We have both seen a difference in our energy levels. It fits into our unpredictable schedules and our food budget has significantly decreased. Food prepping does not have to be hard, there are many YouTube channels that can help you figure out portions and give you ideas for healthy recipes that you will not get sick of. We have also tried local businesses that offer meal prepping, and their food is amazing. A tip for that is making sure they are tailoring your portions to your body and goals. We have run into some that do not do that, and Nick and I ended up with the same portion sizes, when we are two totally different body types.
Dipping your toes in the water is a good thing. Do not push yourself to go all out at first. Making small changes until you find what works has worked miracles for us.
