Sunshine in a Glass: January Green Juice Detox

Juice Detox

Sunshine in a glass! In the coldest and most dreariest month of the year, that is exactly what I need. Well, not exactly… but, it will suffice.

If you haven’t tried juicing before, now is as good a time as any to give it a go. All you need is one good recipe to get you started, and you’ll find yourself improvising in no time. I promise this tastes so good, you’ll become addicted to it’s earthy, vibrant, and delicious flavor! This vegetable and fruit combination makes me feel energized and refreshed, and surprisingly full. Let me emphasize that this isn’t a meal replacement. While you can make this anytime of day, I  prefer morning. This is what I call my morning aperitif (minus the aperol!). Plus, I get to start off the day with a surplus of vitamins and minerals in my tank.

The benefits in this drink include: antioxidants, fiber, folate (b9), potassium, vitamins a, c, d, k, b6, copper, magnesium, potassium, iron, and calcium. As with anything health related, check with your doctor when in doubt.

Makes approx. 2 8 oz. glasses or one large 16 oz. serving (the more you add, the larger the output).

INGREDIENTS

1 large orange, peeled and quartered
2 medium apples, quartered
1 lime peeled and halved
1 inch piece fresh ginger
1 cup (or lg. handful) baby spinach
1 cup (or lg. handful) chopped kale
6 leaves of beet greens or other green
6 parsley sprigs
6 mint leaves

TO CHANGE IT UP: 

1 large carrot cut in fourths
1 whole beet instead of the beet greens

(adding these or any other fruit or vegetable will increase the liquid output).

INSTRUCTIONS

  1.  Juice in your extractor according to the manufacturers instructions. Be sure to have a vessel ready large enough to accommodate all the liquid (I use a 32 oz. measuring container just to be safe, and the spout allows for easy pouring into awaiting glasses).
  2.  Before pouring, stir the juice and feel free to add any nutrients like protein, collagen, or turmeric, if they are in your repertoire.

NOTE:  You can substitute almost any combination of fruits and vegetables that you like… experiment! Just don’t forget to add flavor enhancers like lime, mint, parsley, peppers, etc. You choose what flavors you like!
